Klangbogen for saxophone -do you hear any difference?
I made my choice! Thank You! ❤🎷🎷🎷
Sick bro-trombone player
Hello, Could you specify why you consider the saxophone to be for students and not for professionals? Could it be the material? The sound? Tell me more about that.
The player and mouthpiece are 60 percent of what you hear. What kind of horn did Charlie Parker play? Whatever he could borrow because his horn was in the pawn shop most of the time. :)
Why do you think it’s not a pro horn? I have the exact type from eastern music. I got pisoni pads, steel springs, mother of pearl, metal thumb rest on it, ribbed construction, great engraving all over and it sounds good. What makes you not think it’s pro
It´s in the details and in the total package combined. Build, feel, materials and how it plays.
Nice work Roger. Very enjoyable! @saxxykv is humble. He is pretty good too :)
Sure is!
Very cool. Huge fan of not needing a special high-F-sharp key. You have a great sound!
How do you compare it with the Signature Custom raw?? I am actually thinking of getting one of these eastern music saxophones haha
The Trevor James is a pro horn. It has a better build and a more centered and flexible sound. For the price, the eastern music tenor is a good saxophone.
@@RogerNordling Thanks.
@@RogerNordling does it feel like how a Selmer feels??
@@saxxykv The key layout is similar to a selmer, as is most modern horns today more or less. The Trevor James is no exception here.
@@RogerNordling ooohh ok. thanks for the knowledge hehe
What a bangin sound!
Stay on the SBA…!!!
First off you have a great sound. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. I play a Conn 10m but prior to that my main horn was a SBA from 1951. I hear a lot of the same elements in your sound on the SBA, perhaps what you described as resistance on the SBA vesus the TJ. What turned my attention towards the Conn sound was, in part, the larger bore. The bottom end of the sax speaks so well. The TJ horn has more of an open sound as you describe it. I have played this model and was impressed. If you can afford to keep the SBA do so!!! Can you get the same level of "sizzle" harmonic overtones within the normal range of the horn? Mechanically the TJ once set up is a new horn, what is the state of repair of the SBA? You bought the TJ for a reason, trust your judgement. Thanks again for sharing
Thanks for your comments. The SBA is tweaked to my liking regarding resonators and key heights. The TJ too and brings more of an open sound with this mouthpiece. I have had a few 10m tenors and they are great, free blowing yet centered horns with nice mid frequencies. Enjoy!
love this man
very nice ❤ I aspire to be as good as you hehe by the way, have you noticed that the 3 sizes of the Select Jazz reed sound more edgy than the 2's?? I used the 3S and now the 2H. I switch between the two depending on what type of music I play.
Thank you! I have not tried a select jazz in size 2 as its to soft for my taste. I think that harder reeds often tend to play edgier.
@@RogerNordling I like how you sound. I tried the 3M size but it's too stiff for me haha 😂
Snyggt!
I bet the RAW XS was much heavier than the SBA.
@@pimeye Correct!
@@RogerNordling Thanks. I now have had my RAW for a week and it is heavier than my Mk VI but not as heavy as I had expected (especially using a sax holder neckstrap). I had a bronze Walstein in the past that was heavy. The RAW sound is brighter than I expected but I haven't had enough time to fiddle with mouthpieces, ligatures, reeds etc. What made a big difference was putting a thicker mouthpiece cushion on the mouthpiece.
@@pimeye Haha funny thing. I took away my mouthpiece cushion for a brighter sound. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
@@RogerNordling It's amazing how much difference it makes.

Nice demo. Allowed us to clearly hear the comparison. Right off the bat I preferred the Trevor James, which I was surprised by as I am a SBA fan. It just seemed to speak better and had more resonance when you played vibrato. They are similar though so I guess it has to do with how it feels to you in your hands. I think that some sax players get caught up in having a "vintage horn" to show off to friends when they would sound better on a newer horn, although there are some vintage horns that blow everything out of the water but those are harder to find these days. I just went to a concert and heard Ralph Moore "live" on his Selmer Mk VI tenor and it sounded awesome but then, it was Ralph Moore. He would sound awesome on anything!
Thanks for listening and commenting!
Who are the musicians? And where on the planet earth is this?
Karl Sjölin -pi Johan Tengholm -bs Oscar Werre Johansson -dr. Recorded at ktva, Uppsala, Sweden.
@@RogerNordling Uppsala! Yeah I played there with Thad and Mel in 1978!
Yeah, guys, the spirit is calling you. Amazing how this vibe lives on and on. I think it is an important message that can bring people together.!
Yeah, interesting isn´t it? Thanks Bob.
Is this a modern Florida??
No, it’s a Florida USA model from late 60’s or so.
I have a 45 year old Couf/Keilwerth Superba 1 tenor and a modern Yamaha 82Z. Love them both. The old horn is freer blowing and has a certain heftiness to its sound with the sound feeling more ‘compressed’. The 82Z has a more focused sound and is the most in tune sax I’ve ever played. Of the Selmers I’ve played, I’ve always liked the Balanced Actions more. The Superba 1’s keywork seems modeled after the BA’s. Both my horns are the two best saxes I’ve ever tried over the last 40 years of playing. There are some great modern horns out there, but some won’t even consider trying them.
Good sound where i can find a good vintage otto link....thanks from Paris 👍
Thanks for listening
Thats the question! I do not know of any shop in my country where I can sit down and try various vintage Otto Link mouthpieces to find the right one, that would be awsome. Instead, I take a chance and buy from abroad and sometimes I get lucky but mostly I don’t!
I think the SBA could have more focus and power to the sound. And the Conn had more of a softer and mellower tone. I have a 1939 10M that plays absolutely beautifully.
I play a RAW tenor and I'm very happy with it. Listening to the test the SBA seems to have more body in the opening phrase and it evens up thereafter. Agree that you can push the RAW and sound will remain intact. Can you let us know why you bought the RAW and why you play the RAW more than the SBA at this time. Thank you.
I would not say that the RAW is abetter horn but for me, at this moment I enjoy the response I get from it.
This guy 👦 speaks with an accent 😮😮😢😊
Great sound, a bit like Charlie Rouse. Compliments!
Have a MKVI 77xxx and a RAW, usin a Meyer and Java 3.5 reeds Love them both. Seems like the latter is design on the Selmer, so so similar. The RAW looks "vintage" after 5 years!! Brill. Selmer would have it if I had to choose (and I am not falling for the Selmer hype - it is just a musical instrument after all) because of the sound and the feel of having it in the hands. But there we go. Nice video.
Even through my iPad, the difference is huge. SBA takes the prize. So much color in sound
Thanks for chiming in! To my ears, the SBA has the bottom oumph while the Trevor James got that high end shimmer and crunch to the sound.
Muy lindo!!. Que saxo es?; Buescher, Conn??
Thank you! Its a Conn 10m from 1936.
No escucho grandes diferencias. quizás el T.James sea un poco más corpóreo que el SBA, aunque no tanto. Se escucha por encima de tus saxos tu propio sonido. Saludos desde el lejano sur del sur
SBA wins it.... Stronger mids...The Trevor James doesn't have as much body....
its just matter of preference.. tbh i like more the projection of the TJ but the SBA is a bit bigger int the lower registry
Der Klang ist für mich gleich!
Обожаю саксофон и его покорителей! Мне лично играли и я была счастлива 👍✌️🙏😊
Hey Roger,you sound great.Stop with mouthpieces,lol.
Thanks!
Sounds fantastic still! What ligature is that?
Thanks man! Its a Lebayle ligature.
nice tone…!!!
Both sounded damn good! I do think the metal piece was smoother in tone.
I should add, beautiful performance ❤
As a former 10M owner... They are way over hyped. When i switched to a Yamaha 62II... It felt like i had been hindered by the action of the 10M, and intonation was no comparison. Ergonomics were just not very developed in saxes pre Mark VI. If you want to wrestle with your horn, the 10m can sound very beautiful.
Is playing fast on the 10m possible?
Sounds great both! May I ask what kind of recording gear are you using, microphone, soundcard?
Thanks Janne! I am recording on a PC with Audacity software and a large diaphragm microphone.
Sorry for late reply, the microphone is a Supreme 100usd bought from musikbörsen many years ago. Soundcard is a Presonus Audibox i2.
I’m curious how you figured out the file to 3d print? I’ve played several printed mouthpieces, but just purchased them as opposed to having them printed. Also, what material did you choose? Have you tried printing in metal?
Thanks for your comment. I bought the 3d file and modified it (baffle and floor). I use PLA. Never printed in metal, is that even possible on a budget at home?
Hi Roger- thx for reply. The short answer is there is a wide variety of materials to print with. I believe Syos may use ABS, while Brian at GA Sax uses the same material that is used in dental work. It is a very nice material. Most of the these materials require different printing capabilities than a home printer has, so you might use the home printer to develop your build file and then send it to a commercial printer to have it done in a fancier material. Kudos to you for investigating all this!!
great ! can you send the file for printing?
Sorry, Its available at cults3d.
But then I raised the floor and added baffle which have to be worked on with sand paper. All in all doable but time consuming.
at first listen I would've preferred the 3D printed, evenly balanced and had more core sound to it. but on the second listen, I noticed there's a distinct character (which comes to me as like playing in a live setting with a parabolic shaped eq mix) from it that I have noticed with other 3D mouthpieces that I have listened here in youtube as well. nothing wrong with that "character" it's just there. maybe it's the material? idk I may be hearing things hahaha 😂
Snyggt!
How does the 3D printed mpc feel to play in comparison to the link?
It has a higher beak rsulting in different feel. Otherwise it has a great feel to it.
Two different sounds, I would go with the the 3D. The original sounds like it has been played out.
Sounds great!
France, Germany, Elkhart In., pro saxes are pretty much equal. If the same mpc/reed setup is used, Conn comes out with an edge here.
Ive got a 1955 mark 6 and 1953 10m for those of you that dont know. The 10m has a 6.25 inch bell. The 6 is 6 inches. I use a super tone master on the 10m and a selmer soloist short shank on the 6. Dont know how much difference an sba is but my tech says my 6 has alot of Sba parts. On the 53 10m it has straight tone holes. Both are dark and have lots of color. I wouldnt part with either of them.😊
Great tone! What sax and mouthpiece are you using?
Thanks. I am using Trevor James Signature Custom RAW XS tenor with Otto Link Florida (vintage) USA 8tip.
